Minutes of silence of black armbands the order of the day as the academy teams respect the honour of the great Dutch player and manager

An emotional tribute to Johan Cruyff. The FC Barcelona academy teams rendered homage to the Barça legend in their own particular way by respecting a minute’s silence and wearing black armbands in their games on Thursday, with a number 14 shirt honouring the loss of the great Dutch player and manager, for whom it all started with the Liga 1973-74 victory, and who went on to lead the Dream Team as manager to four consectuiove league titles and the first European Cup in 1992.

The U12, U14 and U16 teams honoured Cruyff at the MIC Tournament matches played in Vidreres, Platja d’Aro and Begur. The U10 team observed a minute of silence before their two games in the Íscar Cup LaLiga Promisesin Pedrajas de San Esteban and Íscar, where a banner was added to the advertising hoardings with the words “Thank you Johan, we all learned from you” and the player of the tournament has been named in honour of the great man.

The U16 B and U12 D teams did likewise at the Menorca CUP 2016 in Bintaufa and Es Castell and there were also moments of silence before the games in the U10 Desafio Cup in Guijuelo (Salamanca) and for the U12 B team in their game against Juventus at anb international tournament in Portugal.

Goalkeepers during training / FCB
The 28 stoppers in the club's academy follow a particular type of tutelage in order to learn the Barça philosophy

It isn’t easy to be a goalkeeper. You are always under pressure. It’s even harder to be an FC Barcelona goalkeeper, as this report shows. There are 28 young goalies in the Barça academy, from 16 year old Rubén Sánchez to 8 year old Pau Fernández, all of whom work under Ricard Segarra, the goalkeeping coordinator at FC Barcelona, and his team of helpers made up of Xavi Ferrando, Carles Gil and Ferran Montijano.

Every Tuesday, Gil and Montijano hold a meeting in the video room with the 18 seven-a-side keepers, where they analyse how the weekend’s games went – whether they used their feet well, how good they were in the air, how they dealt with set pieces and whether they made any mistakes. Such group therapy is felt to be good for the players and helps them to improve.

Footwork

Ricard Segarra and his teams have devised a number of special exercises that work on an aspect that makes Masia goalkeepers so different: playing with their feet. This report shows just how much pressure the Barça goalies are expected to deal with and how they cope with one of the most difficult periods in their whole development – the transition from the 7-a-side to 11-a-side game.

In their first year at U14 level, goalkeepers face all kinds of new challenges. They have to deal with a bigger ball, a bigger pitch and bigger goals, and aerial play suddenly becomes a much more important aspect of what they do, as well as the need to cover their defenders.

“Every stage is different” says Ricard Segarra. “Both in terms of training and the instructions we give them. The only common factor is what forms part of our unique DNA, playing with their feet. From very young, they already know that the goalie is just one further player involved in getting the ball into play and making the play seamless.”

The side coached by Jordi Pérez confirm the first title of the season for the youth football teams with a 1-0 win away to second-placed Cornellà

The U10 (Benjamí) A team is the FC Barcelona academy’s first champion team of the season. Jordi Pérez’s side won 1-0 at Cornellà to win their division with five games in hand. It’s been a wonderful season for the team, who in 25 games have scored 176 goals (an average of 7 a game) and conceded just 14. They are 21 points ahead of second placed Cornellà, who they beat today with a solitary goal from Marc Guiu, the league’s top scorer with 38.

The players celebrated the victory on the pitch, wearing specially made shirts prepared by their parents and FC Barcelona director Xavier Vilajoana, who is in charge of the amateur youth football, joined by Jordi Roura, the technical secretary for amateur youth football were there to congratulate them. The Barça players were also sportingly offered a guard of honour by the Cornellà team. And as tradition dictates, the celebrations concluded by giving the coaches a serious wetting!

Francesco Messori, captain of the Italian Amputee National Team, stopped past La Masia to remind youngsters to cope with adversities with courage

The players of La Masia were visited by Francesco Messori, captain of the Italian Amputee National Team, who provided some wise words of encouragement.

Francesco was born without a right leg, yet has managed to overcome adversities through his humility and hard work, a story which he was keen to share to the people of La Masia.

The inspiring young Italian said: “Do not ever give in to adversity; always have a positive attitude”.

Despite all of his personal battles, Francesco has managed to retain positivity and achieve his goals, the main one of which has been to play the sport he loves.

He managed to represent his country in the Amputee World Cup in Mexico where his Italy side finished in ninth position, and sees Barça’s no.10 as the perfect role model.

"The first day I saw him play, I fell in love with football. He is the reference of a team that cannot be compared to any other. He is the best in the world," said Francesco, of the player with whom she shares a similar surname.

“Like everyone else, do not like to be treated differently because I only have one leg. I want players to go in hard on me when I play football. If you fall get up.”

It is this fighting spirit that makes Francesco the person he is, and his words of wisdom towards the youngsters of the club will remain long in the memory of those who were in attendance, and beyond.

Marc Serra's side win all four games against Deportivo (2-1), Rayo (2-1), Sporting (3-0) and Valencia (3-0)

There is to be a Catalan derby in LaLiga Promises, the tournament for U12 teams being held this week in Villarreal, as Barça take on RCD Espanyol for a place in the quarter finals at 13.00pm CET on Saturday. Barça qualified with wins against Deportivo (2-1), Rayo (2-1), Sporting (3-0) and Valencia (3-0).

Diego Almeida and Àlex Valle scored the goals in the first of Friday’s 12 minute each way matches. That was followed by a nervy encounter with a Rayo Vallecano team that led at half-time before Pablo Páez and Gavi turned things around after the break.

Perfect day

Barça then posted a wonderful display to dispose of Sporting, with Gavi scoring a scorcher and Pablo López making it two before the sides changed ends. A spectacular goal from Aleix Garrido finished off the job. The last game of the day was another exhibition against Valencia, with Àlex Valle scoring twice and the coming from Gavi.

Barça are defeated by Espanyol, 2–1, and say goodbye to the tournament despite being one of the most impressive teams there

Today, football was cruel to FC Barcelona's Under-12 team.

The Blaugrana youngsters fell to RCD Espanyol, 2–1, in the last 16 of the Laliga Promises, held at Villarreal's training centre in Castellón, Spain.

The Catalans, thus, say goodbye to the tournament despite being one of the best teams there, as evidenced by their impeccable track record this season and their impressive play in the group stage, which took place on Friday.

But a pair of defensive errors cost them big time, and the tournament format, with games consisting of two 12-minute halves, has Barça looking uncomfortable out on the pitch.

The quarter-finals look like this: Celtic v Sporting, Atletico Madrid v Espanyol, Villarreal v Betis, and Real Madrid v Malaga.

FC Barcelona, instead of being there as well, are making their way back home after Espanyol sat back and waited before pouncing when they needed to.

After a scoreless first half, Espanyol opened the scoring in the 14th minute, when Mark Sorroche found the net on a counterattack.

Marcos Jurado had a chance to draw Barça level with a header from on a corner kick, but Espanyol goalkeeper Oriol made the save.

Espanyol took advantage of a defensive error by Barça to make it 2–0, leaving Barça in a high-pressure situation with little time remaining.

Barça's Aleix Garrido pulled one back, but it was too little, too late.
